Let's all admit it: Philip is the reason Edenbrooke is that good. Seriously, this author knows that anyone reading this will be begging for the whole of Edenbrooke to be written through Philip's point of view. Even I, a reputed slow reader, was able to finish in one sitting (I was able to make it last over two hours without even trying, but still). Donaldson to tease us with such a perfect, much too short prequel. That, and also the fact that I think it grossly unfair of Ms. Donaldson contrive to make Philip that perfect? I mean, HOW? He such a perfect embodiment of a Regency-era dream that it is impossible to settle for anything else. OMG major fan-girling alert! Swooning! Self-fanning! Twirling! Giggling! AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Finally, Robin Miles' narration is fantastic as always. I was left contemplating the levels of human depravity, martyrdom, brainwashing, and survival. Overall though, this is a great book that made me more aware of Boko Haram, their supposed "purpose," and tactics they used to control the young girls and women they kidnapped, including starvation, abuse, jealousy and brainwashing. A possible downside to this format is that the reader might not feel intensely connected to the characters. This fictionalized account is told in short, vignette-style chapters that make it a quick read despite the heavy subject matter. It prompted me to spend several days doing additional research on Boko Haram, their victims, and what's being done to defeat them. This is a great starting point for anyone interested in learning more about Nigeria and the rise of Boko Haram. A quick and important read you will learn somethingĪ solid YA book that's more mature than most and makes you think. The district's decision last spring to reduce kindergarten class sizes to about 20 students from an average of 24 - while a plus for students and parents - initiated some changes. So far, 2,141 students are in classes at Laurel, Encinal, Oak Knoll and Hillview. "We did not grow to the extent anticipated - 100 more students for a total 2,176 yet - but we expect some students to show up after Labor Day," he said. The trend of increasing enrollment stretches facilities at the already constrained four campuses, requires hiring and training more teachers and presents funding challenges, he said. Superintendent Ken Ranella sees challenges ahead for the Menlo Park City School District now and in the near future as enrollment continues to grow and 320 new housing units are projected east of El Camino Real in Menlo Park. (September 07, 2005) District faces challenges as enrollment grows Publication Date: Wednesday, September 07, 2005īack to School 2005: Menlo Park City School District Benford at her school-and her awards and her school's continually rising test scores-I am reminded of Mr. And the students respected and loved their school leader. Benford stretched herself through external professional networks. The faculty worked individually and institutionally to create a caring climate for students. Her teachers developed into professional leaders in content-driven faculty meetings. For example, over five years, I watched Pamela Benford, a former principal of Cedar Grove High School in Atlanta, who had been mentored by another black principal from the segregation era, foster aspiration in an urban school environment and advocate for her students. I might think so, except that I sometimes see parts of the aspiration, advocacy, access formula work successfully in current schools. The Lost Education of Horace Tate: Uncovering the Hidden Heroes Who Fought for Justice in Schools. Sometimes people ask if the history of black educators under segregation is just, well, old and irrelevant in today's complex educational world. So to me the entire story was, as cheesy as this sounds, about how the type of person someone is matters so much more than their outward appearance. That's why he was so drawn to the mirror room, because he could see himself as he wished the world would see him. When the dwarf looks in the mirror in the beginning of the story, he also saw his true self reflected-tall and handsome, which reflects his hidden talent and intelligence. Ralph sees himself in the mirror, and the girl sees him too, and in the mirror's reflection Ralph appears shrunken and warped, which accurately reflects his inner self. If he was going to kill Ralph, why would he run away in the opposite direction with the gun? (view spoiler) [I wasn't sure either, but my guess was that the dwarf runs off with the gun planning on shooting himself-hence why the girl runs after him, to stop him. Each chapter targets one of nine questions that, not accidentally, resemble the type of questions Hossenfelder engages with on her blog and YouTube channel. It seems more inspired by her work as a public intellectual than born out of discussions taking place between different schools of scientific thought, as her first book arguably was. Yet Existential Physics goes beyond simply criticizing a certain fraction of the scientific community. Little did I know then that this somewhat introverted postdoc would rise to become one of fundamental physics’ most prominent communicators as well as one of its starkest critics. In her 2018 book Lost in Math, German physicist Sabine Hossenfelder criticized researchers in the foundations of physics for their “use of unscientific methods.” In her new book, Existential Physics, she now points out that “some of the research they pursue isn’t scientific to begin with.” I briefly met Hossenfelder at a conference in Mexico about fifteen years ago. Probably few of us, however, would think of faulting scientists. Each one of us might cast blame for this failure differently-be it on the far right or left, be it on mainstream or social media. If anything, the past decade has scattered any hope that the twentieth century’s stellar rise of modern science imbued us with a lasting, mutual understanding of how we agree on truth. “TRUTH” AND HOW we find it has never been an easy topic. |
